Another step you can take to extend the life of your asphalt is crack sealing. When your asphalt cracks, it allows damaging elements to attack your vulnerable surface. Without attention, things will only get worse and eventually cost you more when it needs serious asphalt repair later. Cracks typically form because of two occurrences:
• Erosion- Sometimes as your new asphalt settles, some of the integrity is lost causing cracks to form. It is important to combat those cracks quickly with asphalt repair. A crack sealant will help protect the damaged areas and keep them from getting worse. Any water that touches it will roll off and away from the weaker spots. Without a crack sealant applied, water will be allowed to settle and pool into the damaged areas which will speed up deterioration through erosion.
• Sunlight- Sunlight is a secondary concern that needs asphalt repair. If your surface develops a crack, ultraviolet light and heat can cause the crack to grow and open even further. Crack sealing used to asphalt repair a damaged area will create a barrier to block the sun’s rays and stop them from reaching and deteriorating the unprotected inside walls of the crack.
There are two types of material used in crack sealing during asphalt repair. A cold-applied sealant is ideal for areas with lighter traffic such as driveways, bicycle paths, and quieter roads. This type is used to fill cracks that are up to an inch in width. Hot-applied crack sealants are used on cracks under an inch in width. Regardless of which is used, the crack will be cleaned of all debris and moisture. Then the crack sealing material is applied and smoothed out. It will need to cure before you open the area to traffic once again.
